Publish the website

Once you have created your website and the changes have been approved, it is time to publish it and make it available to online visitors. In this guide you will find all the steps to successfully publish your website.

Index:

1. How does a website go online?

When you visit a website, you have to write an address in the browser bar. For example, this guide site has the address learn.revas.io or Wikipedia has the address wikipedia.org: these addresses are called domains. You can do many things with domains (for example, you can have a mailbox at info@revas.io) and among many other things you can also insert information to say where your website is located and take users to those pages when they visit that address.

Your site is located on the RevasOS servers, which in turn have a unique address that identifies them. In order for the site you just created to be visible when someone visits your web address, you need to enter these addresses in your domain settings.

Before proceeding, do you already have a domain (for example yourwebsite.com)?

2. Buy a domain

Domains are addresses and there are specific companies that allow you to buy them, they are registrars. They provide services with which to buy and then manage the settings and configurations of the domain.

There are several companies, we leave you the list of some and their guides on how to buy the domain:

Also make sure you have read the good security practices for managing a web domain.

Once purchased, proceed with the configuration.

3. Configure the domain

If you already have the domain or have just purchased it, to see the website online you need to enter the specific configurations of your site that indicate to your domain at which RevasOS address they are located. The steps are:

  1. Enter the domain on RevasOS to obtain the configuration information,
  2. Enter the configuration information in your domain.

3.1 Enter the domain on RevasOS

For this procedure, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Websites app: https://themes.eu1.revas.app.
  2. From the list of websites, choose the one you want to add the domain to. If it doesn't have a domain connected yet, you will see a yellow button that says Connect a domain. Click the button.
  3. On the page that opens, enter the domain name with its extension (e.g.: sitoweb.com) in the top bar and press Add.
  4. The domain will appear below in its own tab. In the tab you will find the status and configuration methods of the domain:
  • Verification: we need verification to make sure you are the legitimate owner of the domain.
  • Configuration: with the configuration, the information that the domain will use to connect to RevasOS and show the template you have chosen is added

Perform the same steps also inserting the version with www of your domain (for example: www.sitoweb.it).

Now that the domains are on RevasOS, you can use the indicated configuration keys and insert them on the domain configurations.

3.2 Configure the domain

These configurations must be inserted into the domain one at a time. Each domain has a registry with a list of all the configurations that allow it to know in which web addresses the services to which it must refer are located (for example, where the email server is located). For each provider listed above, we leave you the guide to change the DNS:

On RevasOS, you find the keys to insert with their type, title and value. Once you have made the changes and saved, the updates can be immediate or take some time to propagate everywhere. The speed of propagation of changes depends on various factors and the type of provider chosen.

To see the configuration status, click the Verify button on RevasOS and if the updates have been propagated you will see all the green checkmarks.

4. Final configuration

The last configuration is a good web practice: as you have seen, in the previous step we added two domains to the configuration, namely the simple domain (sitoweb.it) and its version with the www in front (www.sitoweb.it). The good practice is to ensure that if a user visits the website without the www they are automatically taken to the address with the www. To do this, follow these steps:

  1. Go to the Websites app: https://themes.eu1.revas.app.
  2. Search for the site you want to modify and then click on the domain name;
  3. In the domain list, click the button with the cogwheel of the domain without the www and then click Configure domain
  4. In the screen that opens, click Create rule and then click Redirect between different domains* and Proceed to creation in the window that opens;
  5. In the configuration screen, give the rule a name (for example from naked to www) and then in the first box From enter the domain name without www (for example website.it) and in the second box To the one with the www (so www.website.it);
  6. Click Create rule
  7. Once the operation is complete, click Go back to return to the websites dashboard

Conclusion

Now your website is visible to all users who visit your domain and you can start spreading the link on social media, on other websites or in your newsletters.
